An unusual Chinese altar table with 3 drawers made from pear wood and dating from the 19th century. It is made in the Ming Style and comes from Shanxi Province. A very useful piece of furniture for hallways.
Altar tables were used for ancestor worship in China. Usually a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the well being of the household.
They were always long & narrow in form - a configuration seldom found in antique European furniture.
Woods used are Elm, red elm, walnut - more rarely cypress & pear.
Our pieces are mostly 19th century & early 20th century.
This elegant table is ideal for use as a console table in a narrow hallway or as a lamp table behind a sofa.
